Atom A Team Brings Home Bell Capital Cup Championship

2017-01-03

The Richmond Royals Atom A team went undefeated in the 2016 Bell Capital Cup bringing the Championship Trophy to Richmond for the first time since the start of this world famous tournament 18 years ago.  It was a four-day journey that began with the boys winning their opening game against the Metcalfe Jets by a decisive score of 6-1.  The team followed this excellent start with consecutive wins of 3-0 against the Canadian Crushers and 4-1 against the Clarence Castors.  In the quarter finals, the Royals met the Jets again and were able to maintain their streak by winning 4-1.  The semi-final game against the strong Leitrim Hawks team was a true nail-biter.  Up until mid-way through the second period, the Royals were trailing 2-0, but the team rallied and came back to win 5-2 against the Hawks.  For the final game, the Royals were invited to play at the Canadian Tire Centre against the Nepean Falcons.  True to form, the Royals showed their strength, focus and sportsmanship.  The boys dominated play throughout the game, scoring the first goal on the second shift and the final goal in the last few seconds of the game to finish penalty-free with an impressive score of 5-0.  The team played ‘with jam’ in all areas of the game with a balanced scoring attack, a stalwart defense, and solid goal-tending.  We are proud of these 16 young hockey players who played with skill and as a team to bring the Atom A House League Bell Capital Cup to Richmond for the first time ever.

Congratulations on a great tournament - Go Royals Go!
